From a Tiny Seed to a Fresh Salad – Here’s How!
No soil, no digging – just a sunny spot and a vertical hydroponic system to grow crisp lettuce right at home.
Step 1: Germination
Start by selecting your seeds – lettuce is a great choice for beginners. Soak the seeds in warm water (around 55°C) for 4–6 hours, replacing the water once to keep it clean.
Next, take a lidded container and line the bottom with a damp paper towel. Spread the soaked seeds evenly, cover with another moist towel, and mist lightly. Close the lid and place the container in a dark spot at 18–25°C. Mist daily to maintain moisture. In 3–5 days, you’ll see tiny white sprouts!

Step 2: Seedling Stage
Once seeds have sprouted, transfer them to a hydroponic sponge or rockwool cube. Place one sprouted seed per hole – not too deep. Keep the medium moist with daily misting.
Avoid direct sunlight at first. When the seedlings develop their first two true leaves, introduce them to natural light (a windowsill works perfectly) or use an LED grow light for 10–12 hours daily. Lettuce loves light!

Step 3: Transplanting into Your Hydroponic System
When seedlings reach about 10 cm with strong roots, they’re ready for your vertical hydroponic setup.
Prep your system:
-
Fill the reservoir with water and add hydroponic nutrients according to instructions.
-
Run the pump to mix the solution evenly.
-
Gently place each seedling (with its sponge) into a planting port. Make sure roots contact the nutrient solution without being cramped.
Adjust your nutrients:
-
For young lettuce, maintain EC levels between 800–1000 μS/cm.
-
Check pH and EC every 1–2 days and adjust as needed.

Step 4: Daily Care & Harvest
Indoor growers: Use LED grow lights for 10–12 hours daily if natural light is limited.
Then – simply wait! In 25–35 days, your lettuce will be ready to harvest. Snip outer leaves for continuous growth, or harvest the whole head.
